Issues with the Royal Horticultural Society

Having been involved with the RHS for 21 years, this documents RHS failures, operational and financial, which have directly led to a reduction in quality exhibitors, particularly for the Chelsea Flower Show.

I have always been invigorated by the calculated snubs of the rich and powerful, and the many obstructions over these years have proved to be as stimulating as ever

Security staff escorted a gardener away from the site after he attempted a protest at the press day. Tim Penrose, who was dressed as Superman, was removed after attempting to distribute a 72-page leaflet called Restore the RHS.

The hosta-grower from Devon had hoped to celebrate his 40th year exhibiting at the show but fell out with the RHS over his proposals for this year.

He told The Times he had hoped to dress as Batman, but had had to settle for a Superman outfit. “I couldn’t get anybody to come as Robin because they were all a bit nervous, which I get. You need a caped crusader, you need a superhero to save the RHS.”
